City gang leader receives long sentence

Ma-seven gang leader was sentence to seven years imprisonment for robbery on Tuesday.

Frans Masilo, leader of a gang called Ma-seven, has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for armed robbery in the city centre, police said on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old was sentenced in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Tuesday after admission of guilt.

Masilo and friends were arrested, following an armed robbery on the corner of Bloed and Prinsloo streets in August last year. They pointed a firearm at the driver of a delivery truck and got away with over R4 000 and two cellphones.

Central police spokesperson Sergeant Ann Poortman said the sentencing was a huge victory for residents. Ma-seven gang had been terrorising residents in the area. “Ma-seven gang has committed a series of crimes including armed robbery, common robbery and smash-and-grabs in the city centre.”

She said police had arrested members of this group several times in the past but they had always returned to committing crime after being granted bail. This time police managed to convince the court to refuse Masilo and his friends bail.
