Paramedic escapes failed robbery attempt
A paramedic of a well-known ambulance service is grateful he escaped a suspected attempted robbery on Friday.
A paramedic and operational manager of a well-known ambulance service in Pretoria is believed to have narrowly escaped an attempted robbery on Friday.
Best Care ambulance service’s Xander Loubser said he noticed two suspicious-looking men wearing yellow T-shirts wandering around the premises in Robinson Street, Mountain View around 14:30.
“The men asked the domestic worker for directions to Zambezi Drive, but after she gave it to them, they said they would go there later because they were feeling tired at the time,” Loubser said.
“I went outside to park the bakkie (a Volkswagen Amarok that was parked on the sidewalk) inside the premises when the two men followed me.”
Video footage shows the two men seemingly attempting to stop the gate by trying to obstruct the sensors as Loubser enters.
However, the sensors had been disconnected a few years ago when Loubser’s father, Kobus Bester, the owner of the ambulance service, was shot and wounded in the driveway.
In October 2008, robbers blocked the gate sensors, entered the premises and attempted to steal a Toyota Hilux.
Bester was shot in the side when he investigated the noise outside at his bakkie.
The footage recorded on Friday further shows the men talking to the gardener, again asking for directions. The one man either talks or pretends to talk on the phone as the gate closes and they leave.
“We suspect they were trying to steal the bakkie,” Loubser said.
“I feel this could have gone awfully wrong, and I am thankful that it did not.”
Loubser said it was important for the public to be vigilant against robbers.
He said the public should always ensure that their gates are properly closed before they exit their vehicles and that sensors should be regularly inspected for obstructions such as insolation tape used to cover the infrared light.
The case was not reported to the police.
