Roads open after riot
Leeufontein Street and Sefako Makgatho Drive are open following a riot on Monday morning.
Violent protests prompted the closure of Leeufontein Street and Sefako Makgatho Drive, north of Pretoria, on Monday morning, the Tshwane metro police said.
Spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said some residents of smallholdings in the area allegedly started the riot. It was not immediately clear what sparked the protest and who else was involved. “We believe the protest might have been sparked due to service delivery but it could not be confirmed,” he said.
He said political leadership addressed the crowd of 200 irate protesters and they dispersed peacefully.
No one was arrested and there were no reported injuries following the protest. He said the closed roads have been opened.
