Two brave youngsters chased down two thieves on Friday.
Quaid Openshaw (22) and his friend Alban Kannemeyer (22) were driving in Brooklyn when they heard the hysterical screams of a woman.
“We saw two men dressed in blue overalls trying to get into a white Ford Fiesta and immediately stopped to help. We never even realised that they were armed when we started pulling them out of the car,” Openshaw said.
He said the two men broke free from their grip and fled the scene in the Ford Fiesta. The youngsters jumped into their vehicle in hot pursuit.
“We saw police next to the road and indicated that they should follow us. While driving, we spoke to the police over the phone and eventually managed to corner the men on King’s Highway,” he said.
Openshaw said the police arrested the two men and found the stolen goods in the vehicle.
“The whole thing was chaotic. We could have died but we never even thought about that when we were chasing them. We are just so relieved that nothing serious happened today,” Openshaw said.
Captain Colette Weilbach, police spokesperson, said the two men entered a bridal shop in Brooklyn Road pretending to do deliveries for the shop. “On their way out to their vehicle a woman noticed them taking a camera bag and a laptop from the shop. The woman followed them and managed to grab the camera bag but the men fled in the white Fiesta,” she said.
The white Ford Fiesta was reported stolen in Witbank.
Both men aged 50 and 34 are from Mamelodi. They will appear in the Hatfield Community Court on a theft charge. “The police investigation is continuing to see whether the men can be linked with other crimes,” she said.
Weilbach said no weapons were found.
