Some flat dwellers in Danville are living in fear after a would-be robber was shot dead during a stick-up in a business below them.
The trigger was pulled by the victim’s accomplice as he was trying to shoot a security guard on Sunday.
A resident, who asked not to be named, said this was not first robbery at the business.
“Last year, there was a shooting. We are scared and fear for our lives and those of our children. This shooting cannot go on, police must close down this place permanently,” the resident said.
In last year’s robbery attempt, a shootout between the culprits and the police erupted.
Police spokesperson Constable Lerato Ngomane said police were alerted to the latest robbery attempt on Sunday morning.
“Opon our arrival, we were told that three armed male suspects arrived at the business premises and held up the security guard with a firearm. A heated argument arose between the suspects and the security guard,” Ngomane said.
“One of the gunmen accidentally shot his accomplice in the back of the head as he was aiming at a security guard. The victim died on the scene.”
The other two culprits ran away. The one who pulled the trigger was cornered and arrested later in the day.
He appeared on a murder charge in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
“We appeal to the public or any person to report any criminal activities and assist the police with information that can lead to the arrest of the remaining suspect by contacting their nearest police station or Contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”
Ngomane said police had closed down the business as the investigation continued.
“There are allegations that the business poses as an internet café while it is actually operating as an illegal gambling spot. We are awaiting feedback from the Gambling Board.”
