A father has been arrested for murder after he allegedly assaulted his two-day-old baby in Pretoria West on Sunday morning.
According to Best Care Ambulance spokesperson Xander Loubser, the child was critically injured at a petrol station on Church Street at around 03:00. “We arrived at the scene and found the baby laying in her own vomit, covered with a towel. We assessed the child and did resuscitation as the baby had no pulse.”
Loubser said the mother of the child had a scrape wound to her head and was traumatised. He said according to the mother, the father had been intoxicated when a fight ensued after he asked her if she was sure the child was his.
“According to the mother, the father grabbed the baby by the feet and hit the mother with the infant. He then hit the baby on the floor. This is probably when she sustained the critical injuries,” Loubser said.
He said after assessing the baby’s eyes, it was clear there was physical brain trauma. “We transported the child to Kalafong hospital where doctors and paediatricians took over.”
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wanda Olivier said the baby later died.
“The father of the child is in police custody and is charged with murder.”
