A 25-year-old man was arrested after opening a false case of hijacking at the Sunnyside police station on Wednesday. Sunnyside police spokesperson, Sergeant Asnath Malatsi, said the man claimed he had been hijacked on the corner of Park and Bourke streets. He took the police to the place where he claimed to have been hijacked, but the police soon found out that the man was in possession of the keys to the car he claimed had been hijacked.
When questioned, he revealed that his car disappeared after being parked in front of a popular brothel in Stanza Bopape Street in Arcadia. Police went to the brothel and found out from a security guard that metro police had towed the man’s car, as it had been parked illegally.
Police found the car at a metro impound in Madiba Street in the city centre. They arrested the man immediately and he now faces a case of perjury.
Police said they believed several people had opened false cases at the station and warned that they would arrest those who did. “Most people who open false cases are those who became victims of crime while they were with prostitutes,” Malatsi said, adding that most of the men who laid such cases were married and did not want their wives to know they were with prostitutes.
“After falling victim to crime at brothel areas, they claim the crime occurred elsewhere for fear of being found out to have been engaging with prostitutes,” Malatsi said.
Arcadia has a high number of prostitutes, mostly, if not all, controlled by foreign nationals. Arcadia residents have, on numerous occasions, complained to authorities about prostitutes, but it seems nothing much is done.
On Wednesday, police also arrested three men for business burglary and possession of suspected stolen property. The men allegedly broke into one of the businesses in Robert Sobukwe Street in Sunnyside and stole valuable property. All suspects will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s court shortly.
