Sunnyside police have taken a no-nonsense approach to those who open false cases or lie when making statements. A 32-year-old woman was arrested recently for perjury and defeating the ends of justice when she allegedly lied and misled police. The woman was arrested after her husband opened a case of kidnapping at the Sunnyside station in December last year. The woman’s husband believed his wife had been kidnapped by her ex-husband.
Police investigations revealed that the woman was in fact not kidnapped, but was spending time with her ex-husband by choice.
Sunnyside police spokesperson, Asnath Malatsi, said upon investigation they found that the woman had been happy and there were no signs that she had been kidnapped. “Video footage shows the woman happy when out with her ex-husband,” Malatsi said.
This evidence was contrary to the woman’s statement that she had been intoxicated and could not remember anything.
“While she claimed she could not remember anything, she remembered her bankcard pin code when she was withdrawing money by herself at ATMs,” Malatsi said. Police also said the woman in question claimed to have been locked up in a room while she was really out and about the town.
She was arrested at her workplace in Hatfield and will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.
Police have arrested a number of people for lying and opening false cases.
Rekord reported earlier that a 25-year-old man was arrested for opening a false hijacking case. Investigations revealed that the man’s car had been towed by Tshwane metro police after they found it parked illegally outside a well-known brothel in Stanza Bopape Street in Arcadia.
Allegedly fearing the shame associated with engaging with prostitutes, the man claimed he had been hijacked on the corner of Park and Bourke streets, a different spot from where his car had been towed.
Police warned that people who opened false cases and lied when making statements would be arrested.
