Two arrested after mall robbery
Police have arrested two men after a jewellery store at Lynnwood Bridge Mall was robbed on Friday.
Two men have been arrested in connection with a robbery in the Jenna Clifford jewellery store in Lynnwood Bridge Mall on Friday.
Cluster police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said one of the men was caught on Friday night.
“The second suspect was arrested shortly after, in the early hours of Saturday morning,” she said.
Three men entered the jewellery store on Friday afternoon and ordered people inside to lie down on the floor, Weilbach said.
“They used hammers to break open doors and stole an unknown amount of jewellery. The suspects fired two shots before they fled the scene. No one was injured,” she said.
An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said he saw the armed men rushing out of the store after the shots were heard.
“A number of people, waiters and staff from other shops, were chasing after them. They quickly crossed the bridge linking the mall to Glenfair Shopping Centre and ran down a set of stairs.”
He said the robbers jumped into a red Volkswagen Polo and drove away a minute later, apparently after they had a quick consultation.
Weilbach said police recovered the abandoned Polo in Lynnwood. She said the robbers fled in two unknown vehicles.
“Both suspects, aged 30 and 29 from Zimbabwe and Mafikeng will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday on business robbery charges,” she said.
This was the second jewellery robbery at the mall this year. Last month, three armed men dressed in courier overalls robbed the Louie Daniele Diamond Corporation.
Another 51 people were arrested in the Sunnyside police cluster at the weekend.
Weilbach said seven people were arrested for drug related crimes and nine were detained for driving under the influence.
“Four for assault, 15 for theft and shoplifting, two for attempted rape, three for theft of motor vehicles and six for possession of suspected stolen property.”
She said all offenders would appear in either the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court or the Hatfield Community Court.
