Oscar upgraded in prison
Oscar Pistorius' prison status has been changed from category B to category A..
The prison status of convicted paralympian Oscar Pistorius has been moved from a category B to a category A in the Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria.
This was confirmed to Rekord by the spokesperson of the Pistorius family, Annalise Burgess.
She declined to elaborate.
A correctional services spokesman said the status of prisoners was not for public knowledge.
The Daily Mail newspaper reported that category A status meant Pistorius now had access to his own radio, could wear jewellery such as a watch, and could make more personal telephone calls.
His allowance to buy toiletries and sweets, chips and chocolate was increased, and he was allowed to have a hobby as long as it did not involve the use of sharp objects.
Pistorius could now also have contact visits – which meant loved ones could give him a hug and kiss.
He could, nevertheless, see his prison sentence being extended as the State has confirmed its intention to appeal against his conviction. A date for the appeal is still to be determined.
Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide earlier in the year and sentenced to five years in prison. He shot dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in his Pretoria home on Valentine’s Day in 2013. His defence was that he mistook her for an intruder.
