After about three weeks on the run, a second man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Soshanguve police officer. The man was arrested on Monday.
Police spokesperson Constable Magotso Mphenyeke confirmed the man, aged 26, was arrested at his Winterveldt home after days of playing hide and seek with police.
The first suspect (24) was arrested soon after the murder in Soshanguve where he had been hiding since allegedly killing the police constable. “A firearm with no serial number, suspected to be the type used by police officers, was recovered during the arrest,” Mphenyeke said.
The two men allegedly shot the officer several times in the upper body while having drinks with him in Winterveldt, Mabopane, three weeks ago. The 32-year-old off-duty officer died shortly after he was taken to the hospital.
The two men were expected to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday to face charges of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Gauteng police commissioner Lt-Gen Joel Lesetja Mothiba said an attack on police officers was something that should not be taken lightly. “Any attack on and the killing of our police officers will not be tolerated. We are pleased with the progress made by the police in the case. We will ensure that they face the full might of the law.”
Another policeman had been killed in Winterveldt prior to the latest case. Police would not confirm the motive of the killings and also if the incidents were related.
