Metro cops clamp down on Melgisedek

The battle to remove illegal elements from the Melgisedek building is continuing.

The Tshwane metro police clamped down on the notorious Melgisedek building in Riviera on Friday in a cleaning up operation.

DA councillor Elma Nel, who has made it her mission to remove all illegal elements from the building, said the operation was successful and would not be the last.

She said she believed a petition signed by hundreds of people for the relocation of the occupants of the building and media coverage of drug busts in Melgisedek prompted the metro police to act.

Metro police not only cleaned Melgisedek but also Steve Biko Road.

“Illegal car guards and pedestrians who were a source of danger were removed from the area. We are grateful to the police,” she said.

Melgisedek has been in the news the past few weeks after a drug raid in the building, other crime in the area, and a petition calling for the relocation of the residents.

The petition handed over by Nel at a Tshwane metro council meeting demanded that suitable housing be provided for the occupants of the building.

The battle to relocate the residents is continuing.

The metro police could not yet provide comment.
