By-law raids hit hijacked land in Marabastad
Illegal immigrants were arrested, property seized, and illegal connections cut.
The Metro’s Bad Buildings Mayoral Sub-Committee recently led a by-law operation in Marabastad, seizing vehicles, arresting illegal foreign nationals and disconnecting illegally connected services.
Tshwane Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, said at their first stop at a hijacked property in the west of Pretoria, two undocumented immigrants were arrested by the TMPD.
“Our first stop was a hijacked Transnet property on Rebecca Street in Pretoria West. We found a panel beating business and an ice shop operating inside the property. We also discovered that makeshift rooms had been established inside a toilet. We removed illegal water and electricity connections. TMPD arrested two illegal immigrants we found on the premises,” Moya said.

At the second stop, at an unregistered recycling facility in Marabastad, the TMPD arrested another two illegal immigrants who were found working at the facility.
Moya said police confiscated some of the waste and issued multiple fines to the owner for violating municipal by-laws, and disconnected illegal water and electricity connections.

“While in Marabastad, we received a tip-off about another illegal recycling facility on the same street. Our inspection uncovered illegally constructed rooms inside the facility. We disconnected an illegal water connection, confiscated waste, impounded a vehicle found on the property, and demolished the illegal structures,” Moya said.
Chairperson of the Bad Buildings Committee and MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, Flora Monama, said during the raid, multiple items were confiscated for by-law contraventions.
“We moved to First Street in Marabastad to inspect another illegal recycling operation. Our team discovered illegal buildings/structures on-site. The property, which is municipally owned, had been hijacked, with occupants operating without a valid lease agreement. Illegal structures were fully dismantled, one vehicle was towed away, and a water meter was removed from the property,” Monama said.
