Minister denies receiving Shaik application
The Minister of Justice and Correctional Services has denied claims that he received an application from Shabir Shaik to convert his medical parole to normal parole.
Justice Minister Michael Masuthu has denied receiving an application from corruption convict Shabir Shaik to convert his medical parole to ordinary parole, saying he became aware of the matter through correspondence from the medical parole advisory board.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) earlier claimed that the minister received the application directly from Shaik.
Rejecting this, Masuthu said in a statement: “There is no legal provision which allows any conversion of medical parole to ordinary parole. Therefore, any such application will be dealt with in terms of the… provisions,” he said in a statement.
Shaik was found guilty of fraud and corruption in 2005. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for each of the two corruption charges and an additional three years for fraud.
He was released on medical parole in 2009 after serving two years and four months in jail.
