Alexander Forba, who used his two-day-old daughter to assault his partner, is still in police custody after his case was postponed at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Velekhaya Mgobhozi, the case has been postponed to 4 March.
“The man is still in police custody. The case is postponed to March for Forba’s bail application.”
According to a source, the baby girl was buried on Friday in Lotus Gardens at a private service.
Forba was arrested on Sunday 18 February after he used his two-day-old baby girl as a weapon. It is believed that Forba and his partner had an argument when he grabbed the baby by her foot and hit his partner with the baby. The incident took place at the Nicolas Heights Flats in Pretoria West.
Best Care Ambulance spokesperson Xander Loubser said last week Sunday the child was critically injured.
“We arrived at the scene and found the baby laying in her own vomit, covered with a towel. We assessed the child and did resuscitation as the baby had no pulse.”
Loubser said the mother of the child had a scratch on her head and was traumatised. He said according to the mother, the father had been intoxicated when a fight ensued after he asked her if she was sure the child was his.
“According to the mother, the father grabbed the baby by the feet and hit the mother with the infant. He then hit the baby on the floor. This is probably when she sustained the critical injuries,” Loubser said.
He said after assessing the baby’s eyes, it was clear there was physical brain trauma. “We transported the child to Kalafong hospital where doctors and paediatricians took over.”
The baby girl later died in hospital.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wanda Olivier said the man was arrested on charges of murder.
