Microlight crashes in Irene

Two injured in small plane crash in Irene.

Two people were injured when a microlight aircraft crashed in Irene on Friday evening shortly after 18:00.

NetCare 911 paramedics rushed to the crash scene. Two people were aboard the aircraft. One was seriously injured and was immediately rushed to hospital. The other’s injuries weren’t severe, and was not taken to hospital,” said NetCare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann.

According to eyewitness Jeannie Herbst it looked like the microlight’s wing had bent. “I was driving home from Midstream to Irene. When we reached the traffic light at the Southdowns intersection we saw the microlight. The wing seemed to be bent, and the microlight was upside down in the air. Moments later it fell to the ground. My fiancée and I tried to climb over a fence of the Irene Dairy Farm to get to the crash site, but the fence was too high. We immediately phoned NetCare and the CPF (community policing forum). Both responded to the call.”

According to Anthony McKay, general manager of Irene Dairy Farm, the critically injured man was one of the directors at the farm. “We can confirm he has been taken to hospital, and that he is in the operating theatre. The details of the incident are still to be confirmed. We will issue a statement about the accident in due time.”
