MomConnect continues to make maternal healthcare easier in South Africa

A Department of Health initiative continues to strengthen maternal and child health outcomes by delivering relevant health information and guidance to mothers.

MomConnect is a Department of Health initiative that uses mobile technology to register all pregnancies across South Africa.

It gives pregnant women access to important pregnancy information on their cellphones.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the aim is to strengthen maternal and child health outcomes by delivering relevant health information and guidance by SMS or WhatsApp to pregnant women and new mothers.

Since its launch in 2014, over 5 million mothers utilising public antenatal services have registered on the platform in over 95% of public health facilities.

This technology allows pregnancies to be registered on a central database, which allows community healthcare workers access to vital information before clinic visits by pregnant mothers.

These visits are essential in making sure the mother and baby are healthy throughout the pregnancy.

Mothers can register on MomConnect with their mobile phones or at a facility where pregnant women are attending for the first time – their nearest hospital, clinic, or professional medical facility.

It is free to register and get messages, which are available in all 11 official languages.

Mothers can register by dialling *134*550*2# toll-free.

“Registered mothers receive regular, stage-based SMS or WhatsApp messages that offer practical guidance and support throughout pregnancy and during the first two years of the child’s life, empowering them to make informed health decisions,” Mashigo said.

These messages will be in the form of reminders of what to do.

The messages cover topics like antenatal care and accessing care in labour, diet and nutrition, non-pregnancy related infections, hypertension, newborn care, breastfeeding, and immunisation and appointment reminders.

The initiative can also provide feedback to the health system so that the individual needs of pregnant women can be met.

Pregnant mothers should visit clinics before weeks 14, 20, 26, 30, 34, 36, 38, and 40.

These visits are highly effective in ensuring a healthy pregnancy, and users can send questions to the helpdesk.

An automated system suggests answers for frequently asked questions.

MomConnect users can also send compliments or complaints about the service experienced at public health clinics. The Department of Health’s helpdesk operators will follow up on complaints.

Mothers receive health and pregnancy-related information until their baby is two.

In its 12 years of operation, several studies have proven MomConnect to positively impact health behaviours, which meaningfully contribute to the sustainable development goals of reducing the maternal mortality ratio and ending preventable deaths of newborns and children under five.

Momconnect increases breastfeeding by 17% among first-time moms and by 10% among young moms.

It increases family planning use by 6% among moms with previous pregnancies.
