The Tshwane metro police vowed that they would continue with surprise raids at the notorious Melgisedek building in Riviera until all criminal elements have been rooted out.
The metro police and other role-players raided Melgisedek on Friday morning during an ongoing clean-up operation.
Superintendent Kuki Tshabalala, metro police spokesperson, said they arrested 11 suspects for various criminal acts, including possession of and dealing in nyaope. She said police also arrested various people for being a pedestrian source of danger.
“We are planning continual operations at the building to root out criminal elements. We are also liaising with other role-players to develop an action plan to completely remove these unwanted elements,” she said.
Tshabalala said Melgisedek became a point of focus when various residents complained about criminal activities at the building.
DA councillor Elma Nel voiced her approval on Friday morning, praising the metro and other authorities for clamping down on crime. The notorious Melgisedek building has been in the spotlight for many weeks since Nel made it her mission to root out crime in the area.
She recently handed over a petition with hundreds of signatures at a Tshwane metro council meeting, demanding that suitable housing be provided for the occupants of the building. “I believe the petition and ongoing complaints about the building have finally spurred authorities to action and we are thankful for the work they are doing,” Nel said.
