Nkosi hopes to be a cycling champ

Given Nkosi speaks about competing in the Cape Town Cycle Tour and his hopes for the future.

Pretoria born Given Nkosi is only 15 years old, but has more medals than most sportsmen his age. Nkosi lives with his family in Salvokop.

Earlier this month he participated in the 47km cycling race at the Cape Town Cycle Tour competition and finished in less than an hour and a half.

“Although I did not win, I managed to complete the race in less than 1 hour 30 minutes. I believe I did well,” Nkosi said.

Nkosi was introduced to cycling by the principal at Laerskool Jopie Fourie after the manager of the Speke Cycling Club asked him to select a few boys to join the club.

Although he did not have a bicycle of his own, Nkosi dedicated most of his time to preparing for the competition.

“I made sure that I jogged every day to keep myself fit and gathered enough strength for the competition.”

Nkosi has over 80 medals, some of which he received for competing in athletics. He said he received a lot of support from his friends and family. “My family and friends encourage me to do my best all the time and are very supportive.”

He hopes to own a bicycle in order to make it easier for him to train. One of Nkosi’s dreams is to become a professional cyclist in future.

“Cycling is my passion, but I also understand that one needs a qualification to fall back on in case things don’t go as planned. After I finish matric, I will enrol for a marketing degree at the university of Johannesburg,” he said.
