Five nabbed over stolen smokes
Five people were arrested on Monday after they robbed a business in Middelburg, fleeing with large quantities of cigarettes, police said.
Police have arrested five people in Silverton after a cigarette delivery van was robbed between Middelburg and Witbank on Monday, police spokesperson Warrant Officer Michael Mbewe said.
The arrest on Pretoria Road came after a tip-off prompted Brooklyn and Silverton police to trace a silver Hyundai.
“It is alleged that the suspects took large quantities of cigarettes in the robbery and at the time of the arrest, goods were in the process of being sold to a businessman in Silverton,” Mbewe said.
Mbewe said the men were found in a flat in Silverton where cigarette boxes were recovered in different apartments in the building.
The Hyundai was also seized, Mbewe said.
“The suspects are facing charges of possession of suspected stolen goods. They are to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.”
