Pretoria central police have warned people to be on the look out for bogus prophets who rob them of their belongings in the city.
“This group of men claim to know everything about the victim and offer to help them with their problems,” spokesperson Sergeant Ann Poortman said.
She said the men obtain information about the victim before approaching them, making it easier for victims to believe them.
“They would approach you by calling your name as if they knew you. They would tell you stories about your past or future.”
Poortman said the perpetrators told victims they needed to cleanse themselves from witchcraft before they robbed them.
“They would request victims to empty their pockets or bags and they would even ask them to withdraw all their money from their bank accounts.”
“The bogus prophets would give them a stone and point out a road intersection where they instructed them to drop it.”
She said they told victims not to look back while walking to the intersection.
“When victims return, the perpetrators would have left with their belongings.”
Poortman said students and people who had just withdrawn money were the main targets.
