Woman caught in spray of bullets

A woman narrowly escaped with her life when she was caught in the middle of a spray of bullets during an armed robbery.

Instinct most probably saved the life of Tracey Fitzpatrick from Garsfontein when she was caught in a spray of bullets Sunday night.

If she ducked down a second later a bullet would have seriously wounded her or worse, taken her life.

Fitzpatrick was on her way to visit her mother at the Pretoria East hospital when she decided to make a quick stop at the Woodhill Spar pharmacy.

“I noticed an agitated driver behind the steering wheel of a white Nissan Juke that was double-parked in front of the Spar. At first I thought nothing of it and decided to wait for him to leave before I parked my car. Our vehicles were facing each other,” she said.

What Fitzpatrick did not know at the time was that the Woodhill Spar had just been robbed by four heavily armed men.

She said a man suddenly jumped out of the passenger’s side and pointed a rifle in her direction. A terrified Fitzpatrick ducked down when the armed man opened fire at her vehicle.

“I immediately put my car in reverse and floored the pedal. I was terrified,” she said.

The armed man fired eight shots before the Nissan Juke sped away. When she managed to sit upright, she noticed one single bullet hole in her windscreen on the drivers’ side. “If I had not ducked down I am sure it would have hit me. I am so thankful to be alive,” she said.

The four robbers are also implicated in two other robberies in Wapadrand Saturday morning.

Warrant officer Michael Mbewe, police spokesperson, said four robbers in a white Nissan Juke robbed two businesses of its electronic equipment and employees of their money, wedding rings, cellphones, wallets, sunglasses, keys, a 500GB hard drive and a motor vehicle.

He said no arrests had been made yet.
