A security guard at the education department’s storage facility in Hercules was recently arrested for the theft of furniture. Community Policing Forum chairman (CPF) Conrad Naudé said the man was caught stealing while pretending to be patrolling the facility.
“Two of our sector members who were patrolling the area saw the security guard pushing a dustbin and became suspicious. They asked him what was in the dustbin. When they opened it, they found chairs and table material from the storage facility,” Naudé said.
The security guard was asked where he was taking the items and he replied that he had noticed the abandoned dustbin and was taking it back inside the storage facility. “This surprised the CPF members because the man was walking in the opposite direction. The guard eventually admitted that he stole the items and that he was on his way to sell them,” said Naudé, adding that scrap metal dealers in the area often bought stolen goods.
