The Tshwane metro police pounced on prostitutes and vagrants living near a stream in Vom Hagen Street west of Pretoria on Thursday.
“The operation focused on the vagrants on the banks of the stream and next to the Tshwane market, where it is alleged that prostitution and drug-related activities were taking place,” said metro police senior superintendent, Isaac Mahamba.
Mahamba said more than 30 illegal structures were demolished and vagrants who lived along the stream, from Rebecca Street to Vom Hagen Street, were removed. “One person was arrested for drug possession,” he added.
About 53 people were searched and 34 premises inspected during the operation. “We deployed eight vehicles with about 28 members. The role players in the operation were the technical services, social crime prevention and region 3 members.”
He said the area around the stream in Vom Hagen Street was a danger to residents, especially students from the Pretoria West High School and University of Pretoria, who had been robbed at the bridge.
Follow-up operations would be conducted, Mahamba said.
