The newly built Jean Crossing centre in Jean Avenue in Lyttelton was robbed in the early hours of Saturday morning.
According to Captain Colette Weilbach of the SAPS, eight men, one of whom was armed with a rifle, approached the Pick n Pay at 06:45. One of the robbers held down the security guard at the door. The seven other suspects forced open the main door of the Pick n Pay and stole an undisclosed amount of cigarettes.
“The suspects fled in a silver Chevrolet Spark and a white Ford Bantam bakkie. No shots were fired and no one was injured,” said Weilbach.
She added that the Lyttelton police are investigating a case of armed robbery.
