A reward of R50 000 has been offered for information leading to the arrest of the people involved in the murder of Adonis Elphus Motha (46).
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-General Solomon Makgale said Motha was reported missing at the Akasia police station on 4 June 2009. He left home on 3 June, telling his wife that he was going to see a friend in Soshanguve.
His body was discovered in a veld next to Skietfontein Road in Ga-Rankuwa on 5 June. He had several stab wounds to the chest and his clothes were partially burned after what appeared to be a failed attempt to get rid of his remains.
“Investigations revealed that Motha’s body was left at the scene after being killed somewhere else, and the veld was set alight to conceal the evidence,” said Makgale. Motha’s car was later recovered in Arcadia, parked at the corner of Wessel and Francis Baard streets.
Motha’s twin brother and businessman Kaizer Nyatsumba spoke to Rekord this week, saying the family was upset that no arrest had been made after six years.
“According to the investigating officer, Captain de Jong, the National Prosecuting Authority’s senior prosecutor, Mulaudzi, in the Pretoria North region, has now taken a decision to close his case docket. We, Adonis’ family, who did not even get the privilege of burying him, simply cannot allow this travesty to happen,” said Nyatsumba.
“So, with a broken heart, I turn again to you my compatriots, as I did following this dastardly murder, with my cri de coeur: please, please, please help us find my brother’s killers. Nobody, least of all a gentle soul like Adonis, should ever be killed with impunity. Those who tortured him and took his life should be found, prosecuted and sent away to rot in jail.”
Makgale urged anyone with information that could aid investigators in solving the case to call the nearest police station.
The reward, if the information was deemed helpful, would be paid out immediately, he said.
