A total of 56 people were arrested for various crimes over the weekend as part of the celebrations of Human Rights Day on 21 March.
According to Brooklyn police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach, the arrests were part of cluster police operations from Friday 20 March to the morning of Sunday 22 March.
“With the focus on the prevention of property and contact related crimes, the police managed to arrest a suspect for the attempted theft of a motor vehicle, four for possession of suspected stolen property, four for possession of house breaking implements, three for the possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, and two for burglaries. Another four were arrested for common robberies and seven suspects were arrested for possession of dagga and drugs,” said Weilbach.
She added that suspects were also arrested for theft, shoplifting, fraud, assault, malicious damage to property, reckless and/or negligent driving and contempt of court.
All of the suspects will appear in the Hatfield Community and Pretoria Magistrate’s courts respectively on Monday.
“The police will continue their concentrated efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment fro all the people they serve,” said Weilbach.
