Forty arrested in weekend crime blitz
Forty suspects arrested in a weekend crime blitz in Temba Cluster over the weekend.
A total of 40 suspects were arrested in Winterveldt in a crime prevention blitz conducted in the whole of Temba Cluster.
Police spokesperson constable Petunia Chabangu said the operation was part of the police‘s effort to squeeze criminals out of the community and adopt a zero tolerance approach to crime.
“Two suspects, aged 27 and 29 were arrested in Temba for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” said Chabangu. She said a z88 pistol, a norinco as well as several rounds of ammunition were seized. “Both suspects were arrested and detained at Loate Police Station,” she said.
The suspects were expected to appear in Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates Court on Thursday.
The suspects were arrested at Bushveld Road next to Makgotho Shell garage at Winterveldt by Railway Police.
Winterveldt has become notorious for violent crimes such as rape, robbery and murder. Chabangu said the police will intensify the operation during the Easter holidays.
She said the intensive crime prevention operations ran over a course of three days from Friday to Sunday and was conducted all over the area with a police crime prevention operation, dagga and drug squad.
“Among the people who were arrested, 20 received fines for drinking in public, four for traffic violations and three tavern owners were arrested for not complying with the liquor Act,” said Chabangu.
One person was put behind bars for possession of dagga; five were arrested for being illegal immigrants, two for robbery with weapons other than a firearm, four for possession of dangerous weapons, two for assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm and one for attempted murder.
According to Chabangu, members of the dog unit also assisted during the operations, and focused on inaccessible hot spots. “The intensive crime prevention operations progressed with the Loate tactical response team and other police members sweeping throughout the inner hot spots and visiting taverns. The patrons were searched and those who drank outside taverns and on the streets were busted,” she said.
