Mamelodi police cluster arrested 72 people at the weekend during a crime prevention operation, police spokesperson Warrant Officer Michael Mbewe said.
He said the arrests took place between Saturday and Sunday when police conducted stop and searches, tracing of wanted suspects and raiding gambling hotspots and liquor outlets.
“Suspects were apprehended for various transgressions ranging from defeating the ends of justice, possession of suspected stolen property, public drinking and theft out of motor vehicle,” Mbewe said.
He said other charges included home burglaries and theft, reckless and negligent driving, fraud, possession of drugs, possession of unlicensed firearm and assault.
“These operations will intensify as more people are preparing to celebrate the Easter holidays.”
Mbewe said the criminals are expected to appear in court soon.
