Four armed men were arrested in Silverton on Friday morning, police said.
Spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the national traffic police were patrolling on the N1 near Watermeyer Street when just after 08:00 a white Opel Corsa bakkie driving in the yellow lane caught their attention.
“When the suspects noticed the traffic officers, they tried to avoid them by moving to the far right lane. The traffic officers, however, stopped them,” he said.
When the driver was asked to show his licence, two of the occupants jumped out and ran away.
“One of the remaining two suspects pulled a firearm. The traffic officer managed to disarm the suspect,” he said.
Sepato said the two men were arrested after burglary equipment was found in the bakkie.
“Police also found out that the firearm was stolen in Kempton Park last year. The vehicle is believed to have been stolen in Johannesburg but investigations are still ongoing.”
Two hours later, the two men who ran away were found and arrested in Brummeria, Sepato said.
“They were found in possession of two firearms.”
The four men would appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.
