A bogus buyer apparently intent on stealing a vehicle from a dealership north of Pretoria on Monday ended up being wounded.
He met his match when the manager of the business in Sefako Makgatho Drive recognised him from a previous attempt.
Police spokesperson Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said the manager slipped into his office on the pretense that he had to get paperwork ready. He used this opportunity to phone the police.
“When the police arrived at the dealership, the man fled in a Nissan Tiida. A chase ensued and police cornered him in a cul-de-sac,” Mogale said.
A shootout broke out and the man was shot and wounded.
Santi Steinmann, spokesperson for Netcare 911, said the wounded man was treated in Rooibos Road, Montana, where the shooting took place.
She said he was taken to a nearby hospital, and was receiving treatment under police guard.
Police were investigating.
