DA marches against drug abuse in Winterveldt
DA marches to police station, taking a stand against drug abuse in the community.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for the reinstatement of the narcotics bureau, a police unit that previously dealt specifically with drugs and crime intelligence around drugs.
Speaking during an anti-drugs awareness march in Winterveldt on Saturday, DA member of the provincial legislator Ashor Sarupen said drug abuse was a deep-seated problem that needed to be eradicated.
“We need more frequent raids of drug dens and visible policing around schools to keep drug dealers away, and the narcotics bureau is the answer,” said Sarupen.
The DA organised anti-drug marches around Gauteng and petitioned at different police stations. Marches have been planned for the rest of April.
Sarupen said the DA decided on the anti-drug campaign following rising drug abuse and associated criminality, especially in Gauteng. He led two different marches on Saturday, attended by more than 200 DA members and Winterveldt residents. The march was peaceful, occurred without incident and was pre-approved by police.
The marchers later picketed in Daveyton. Participants marched several kilometres throughout the day and handed over a memorandum to each local police station.
“The DA will continue to demand that specialised policing units be reinstated to deal with crimes and will be pursuing the issue though the various councils, legislatures and parliament. The DA will be running a month-long campaign with residents against drug abuse,” said Sarupen.
