The theft of public steel fencing in the west of Pretoria has become rife and residents fear that their own homes will also be targeted.
The fencing around the Tshwane metro‘s Nature Reserve in Wespark has been stolen piece by piece the past few months. At the back of the resort in Quagga Road, virtually no fencing is left. The stretch in Rod Street has already been removed.
Chairperson of the SA National Civics Organisation Nagesh Chetty said: “The security guard at Wespark just sits at the gate and does nothing. This is a waste of taxpayers’ money because security does not look like they are doing their work.”
Chetty was also worried about the theft of road signs and barriers along highways.
“The Mabopane highway steel barriers have been stolen. All of it. In Roger Dayson road heading to Eeufees Road, criminals have started stealing the steel barriers too,” Chetty said.
“This is really ridiculous, the metro needs to do something about this matter. The stolen steel gets sold at scrap metal dealerships. There needs to be rules and regulations preventing the dealers from buying it.”
The Tshwane metro has not responded to enquiries by the time of going to print.
