Goat put down after beating
Police in the north of Pretoria are investigating two charges of animal cruelty after a goat was beaten and a dog was thrown into a pit earlier this week.
The severe beating of a straying goat by a woman in Soshanguve has prompted an investigation into animal cruelty.
The animal was hurt so badly that it had to be put down, said the Tshwane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
Spokesperson Korky Levanon said people initially thought the goat had its legs chopped off after it wandered into a field in Soshanguve Block PP on Monday.
“There were witnesses who saw the woman beating the goat. The goat was taken for veterinary treatment, but had to be humanely euthanized due to the severity of the injuries sustained,” she told Rekord.
The Rietgat police were investigating.
Levanon said: “The message here is that even though animals cannot talk, they still have the right to protection. Injuring an animal intentionally is a prosecutable offence.”
Levanon said a second charge of animal cruelty was laid at the Loate police on Monday after a puppy was thrown into an unused pit toilet in Winterveldt.
