A hip-hop artist, Bongani Lukhele, also known as Richman, from Itsoseng Phase 8 in Mabopane, makes low-budget kasi movies under the name Cash Founders Production.
Lukhele started out as a hip-hop artist and later developed an interest in the film industry and began producing his low-budget kasi movies.
His recent production titled Love is blind – Part 1 has been positively received by his audience and he is working on finishing the second part of the movie.
“When the community watched part one of Love is blind which ended with ‘to be continued’, they demanded that we make part two so they can see how this interesting story ends,” said Lukhele.
The Love is blind movie is about young people who fall in love and the bad influence that crime has on them. It focuses on everyday issues such as drug abuse and how young people endanger themselves while involving themselves in relationships.
With the help of his production team, Lukhele completed the camera work, directing and editing of both part one and two of Love is blind. He used his own songs on the movie’s soundtrack to avoid paying for copyrighted music.
Fannie Valoyi, also known as Madida, an additional member of the production, said: “I am honoured to be part of the team and I hope my input would assist in making a better movie than the previous one.”
The cast of this movie consists only of the inexperienced youth of the Itsoseng community. “I met Lukhele through a mutual friend and when I heard of his project, I wanted to be part of it. I believe Love is blind will change the negative mindset of young people in our community,” said Xolisani Shabangu, an actress in Love is blind.
According to the community of Itsoseng, they are pleased with this on-going movie production project because it keeps young people from being involved in bad activities such as crime and drugs.
“I am happy about what these young people have decided to do, regardless of all the challenges they face. But most importantly, their parents are happy and proud of them,” said Pastor Jan Mabunda of the Mabopane Baptist Church.
Lukhele’s goal is to educate the youth of South Africa through his movies. He also hoped that one of his cast members from Itsoseng would make it to the “big stages” of the entertainment industry.
