Residents live in fear next to ‘death trap road’
Residents of The Reeds are living in fear of the notorious Uitsig Road.
Residents in Jacqueline Street in The Reeds are living in fear of the dangerous Uitsig Road, as cars constantly veer of the road and plummet through a servitude and into the houses.
One resident, Byron Rive, says the sharp 90° turn at the end of Uitsig Road has caused many people to veer off. “Many people speed down the road, often reaching speeds in excess of 140km/h. They do not see the approaching turn and end up losing control and driving through my boundary wall. It is a death trap.”
Rive said most accidents have occurred in the early hours of the morning. “Many of the people who have ended up driving through my wall were drunk. One man was so drunk, when police came to speak to him, he could not even stand.”
Democratic Alliance ward councillor Casper McDonald said the council urges motorists to practise caution on the road. “The council has to replace and repair broken barriers and flattened road signs up to six times a year. The problem is not with the condition of the road, but with the fact that motorists are not taking responsibility for their actions.”
“Motorists driving on Uitsig Road should start driving carefully and with integrity. This means they should do the right thing at all times, even when nobody is watching them,” said McDonald.
He added that a investigation into the viability of installing a speed bump had been done, but found that installing one might cause even more accidents as it might cause motorists driving at high speed to lose control. “If residents call for another study into what might be done on the corner, I will liaise with the right departments at the municipality to ensure that it is completed.”
Rive said although nobody has died while crashing through his wall, he lives in constant fear. “My bedroom is not far from the boundary wall where people keep crashing through. What happens when one driver doesn’t stop and ends up driving through my house while I sleep?”
