Who put the hole in the doughnut?

In celebration of doughnut day, we investigate how the doughnut got its hole.

Today is National Doughnut Day, but who decided to put a hole in this tasty treat?

According to ToriAvey.com, holes were added to the center of a fritter out of necessity.

In initial stages, a fritter recipe was created, which is similar to the recipe that is used to make doughnuts today. At a certain point, egg yolks were added to the dough to produce a richer and firmer end-product.

A problem arose, though: the fritters would often end up raw in the center after cooking. The exterior would cook before the inner part of the doughnut did.

How was the problem solved? The addition of a hole in the center eliminated that problem.

The hole invention is mostly attributed to Captain Hanson Gregory, a Dutch sailor whose mother made him some doughnuts for a voyage.
