First place for Matthew Greer

Sutherland High School pupil and a member of The Bicycle Company Race Team, Matthew Greer, recently took first place in the 16-17 year age group when he participated in the South African Duathlon Championships.

The event took place at the cricket oval, University of the Free State on the Bloemfontein Campus and the race consisted of a 5km run followed by a 20km bicycle ride and finished with a 2.5km run. The racing was fast and furious from the start, with the first 5km’s being completed in 17:52 min. On the 3rd lap of the 4 lap course Greer’s front wheel slipped out from underneath him and he took a tumble. He recovered quickly and continued with the race. He had a very strong 2nd run finishing first in a very good time of 1:04:15, even beating most of the boys in the 18 to 19 year old age group. This concluded a very successful week for Matthew, as he also came 3rd in the South African Biathle Championships held in East London the previous Sunday.
