Thousands of school pupils march through CBD
Thousands of school pupils marched through Pretoria central to the Department of Basic Education.
An estimated 4 000 school pupils marched to the Department of Basic Education on Thursday to hand over a memorandum to the department.
Police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said the pupils marched through Pretoria central, blocking several roads.
She said Struben Street was closed for the protest.
“Police and the Tshwane metro police are monitoring the roads,” she said.
The march comes after the Congress of South African Students (Cosas) disrupted schooling on Thursday morning after they forcefully removed learners from classes to join in the march.
According to the Gauteng education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, reports of intimidation, rampage and disorder were caused by members of Cosas.
Cosas had called for an urgent intervention from government to deal with the pupils in Malamulele, Limpopo, where they have not attended school in months.
According to a reliable source, the pupils were causing chaos in Sunnyside, damaging shops and property.
