Dawie Roodt attacked and wounded in house robbery
Economist Dawie Roodt, was attacked and wounded in his home at a security estate in Pretoria east on Thursday.
Economist Dawie Roodt was wounded when four armed men attacked him at his home in a security estate in Pretoria east on Thursday, Afriforum said.
Roodt was reportedly accosted around 19:30 when he went to open a gate for his daughter returning home from university.
He was stabbed in the arm and suffered head injuries.
Civil rights group Afriforum said his wife and children locked themselves in a room and were unharmed.
“Mr Roodt suffered serious head wounds and his arm was seriously injured. His wife and children are unscathed, but terribly traumatised,” said Afriforum head of community safety Ian Cameron.
Trade union Solidarity said Roodt underwent an operation at the Pretoria East Hospital on Thursday night and was out of danger.
Roodt’s secretary, Erika Botha, was quoted as saying: “He is okay but he will be undergoing more operations.”
She reportedly said the attackers fled with the family’s cellphones, laptops and bags.
Channel 24 reported that Roodt was stabbed several times when he freed himself from ropes and tried to protect his family.
Eskom load shedding kicked in during the robbery, which reportedly caused the robbers to flee in the dark.
Solidarity CEO Dirk Hermann wished Roodt a speedy recovery and his family all the best.
“Unfortunately incidents such as these have become a daily occurrence in South Africa. Over the last 24 hours, five people have been killed in robberies. We are just grateful that the Roodt family have been spared.”
Police were not available for comment at the time of publishing.
