Dawie Roodt was protecting daughter
Economist Dawie Roodt was hacked with a panga when he was protecting his daughter from four armed men who entered his home at a security estate in Pretoria East on Thursday, police said.
Economist Dawie Roodt was protecting his daughter from four assailants when he was stabbed at his Pretoria home on Thursday night, police said.
Provincial police spokesperson Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said Roodt lured the intruders outside, telling them there was money in his car.
“As the suspects took him outside, there was load-shedding and Mr Roodt fought the suspects in the dark. During the fight he was hacked with a panga. He sustained injuries to his head and arm.”
This happened around 19:30 at the Roodt family’s home in a security estate in Pretoria East.
Trade union Solidarity said Roodt underwent an operation at the Pretoria East Hospital on Thursday night and was out of danger.
Roodt’s secretary, Erika Botha, was quoted as saying: “He is okay but he will be undergoing more operations.”
She reportedly said the attackers fled with the family’s cellphones, laptops and bags.
Mogale said Roodt’s daughter was visiting on Thursday evening and as she came to the gate, she was confronted by four men.
“Two suspects were armed with a panga and a revolver. They forced her into the house where they tied up all of the family and demanded money. Mr Roodt indicated that there was money in the car outside.”
Mogale said the fighting ensued after they took him outside.
“The suspects fled the scene and he was taken to hospital for medical attention.”
Solidarity CEO Dirk Hermann wished Roodt a speedy recovery and his family all the best.
“Unfortunately incidents such as these have become a daily occurrence in South Africa. Over the last 24 hours, five people have been killed in robberies. We are just grateful that the Roodt family have been spared.”
