Private reward after attack on Dawie Roodt
A Nelspruit crime prevention organisation has offered a R50 000 reward for information leading to the capture of the men who attacked economist Dawie Roodt in Pretoria East last Thursday.
A private reward has been offered in a bid to catch the men who attacked economist Dawie Roodt and his family in Pretoria East last week.
Bossies Community Justice, a Nelspruit-based non-profit organisation that assists police with crime investigation, said it would pay up to R50 000 for information leading to the capture and prosecution of the four attackers.
Operations manager JJ Meiring said: “We assist those who have been attacked by criminals and we are offering this reward of up to R50 000 for information that would result in the suspects being caught and brought to book.”
Roodt was seriously hurt after four armed men entered his home in the Luberon security estate last Thursday evening. They tied him and his family up.
Roodt found a way to free his hands and tackled one of the robbers armed with a panga. He was hacked in the arm and head.
Roodt underwent several operations and was admitted to the ICU at Pretoria East hospital.
Meiring said: “If anyone has any information, please contact 082-567-5212 or post a message on our Facebook page.”
Roodt’s daughter, Danielle (24), told Rekord on Monday her father was doing fine.
“He went for another surgery on Sunday morning where they attached his nerves. The operation was a huge success and my father is in good spirit.”
Listen to Danielle talk about her father here:
She said she still could not believe what had happened.
“Every time I think back, it hits me again. We are still a bit rattled and trying to get back into our routine.”
Danielle said she had no doubt that her father saved their lives.
Danielle arrived home at 19:45 on Thursday and was confronted by men standing at her car door in the garage.
“They asked where my father was and if anyone else was home. They took me inside and got me, my dad, step-mom and my sisters in the foyer where they tied us up, gagged us and blindfolded us,” she said.
She said the men were armed with a revolver, a panga and a hunting knife.
Due to Eskom’s scheduled load shedding, the power went out during the ordeal.
“They became nervous. They demanded cash and my dad told them it’s in his car which was in the garage outside. As one of the robbers tried to open the garage, my dad managed to free himself and tackled the guy,” she said.
She said a struggle ensued between Roodt and the robber when her father was stabbed.
Danielle said the man fled after Roodt yelled for help.
“The other guys in the house took some items before they also fled. We managed to untie ourselves and ran to the window to look for my dad. He lost quite a lot of blood and I rushed him to hospital,” she said.
She said the robbers took off with cellphones, iPads, laptops, external hard drives and some clothing.
Police spokesperson Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said the robbers were still at large.
“No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.”
