Police allegedly release drunk driver
Allegations have been made that the Lyttelton police let a drunk driver go after he crashed into a car.
Lyttelton police station officers allegedly let a drunk man drive home after he crashed into a car in the early hours of Monday morning.
A private security guard said the car, a white BMW X5, crashed into the side of a parked vehicle, apparently when the intoxicated driver fell asleep.
“We were patrolling the area around 02:00 when we came across the scene at the garage. When we drove up we saw the driver of the BMW had crashed into the side of an Opel Corsa bakkie and was asleep at the wheel.”
He added: “We desperately tried to wake the man up, but it was for naught. We knocked at his window, and shouted at him to open up, but he was too drunk to notice. This was when we saw that the inside of his car was littered with empty bottles.”
The officers and curious onlookers phoned the Lyttelton police station, who responded to the scene.
The security officer added that the befuddled man woke up about 10 minutes before the police arrived on scene.
“When he woke up we told him what had happened. He was aggressive and started fighting with us. When the police showed up he started arguing with them as well.”
The police then allegedly put the inebriated squabbler in the back of their police van.
“They kept him in the back of their van for 20 minutes before they let him out and allowed him to drive home, completely intoxicated,” said the security officer.
Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said the station would investigate the matter and the allegations against its officers.
