‘Raped’ girls return to same school
Two girls allegedly raped at a primary school in Lethabong have returned to school with the boys suspected to have committed the crime.
Two of three girls allegedly raped at Kutumela Molefi Primary School last month have returned to school with the suspected perpetrators, the Gauteng department of education said on Tuesday.
The three girls, aged between 7 and 9, were allegedly tied up and sexually assaulted on the school grounds in Lethabong by a two fellow-pupils in June. One of the boys was 15 years old.
Education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said the two girls returned to the school after their parents agreed to this. The other parent moved his child to another school.
She said the two suspected culprits were still attending the same school, however, the department was considering removing them.
The two appeared in court on Friday last week and on Monday.
She said the affected pupils and all the parents concerned received counselling after the education MEC Panyaza Lesufi visited the school two weeks ago.
Lesufi said: “We are committed to ensuring learning and teaching takes place in a safe, nurturing and conducive environment for all learners in Gauteng.”
