GRAPHIC IMAGES: Alleged hijacker dies of heart attack in N4 shootout
Shootout between thieves and police on N4 highway.
The N4 west near the Simon Vermooten off-ramp sounded like a war zone on Tuesday afternoon as police chased the robbers of a cigarette truck.
Multiple shots were fired, said an eyewitness who asked not to be named.
“I was sitting in traffic when I heard shots, easily 14 or 15. It sounded like warfare. The next moment I saw the police helicopter fly over and a police vehicle come speeding past,” said the witness.
“A short distance down the highway, on the N4 westbound, I saw a man lying next to the road behind an Audi.”
Silverton police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said: “Thieves robbed a British American Tobacco truck in Silverton and attempted to escape. Police officers then chased them onto the N4.”
According to a reliable source, one of the suspects had died on scene from a heart attack when he tried to flee from the police.
Two of the other suspects have been arrested.
