Armed robbery rises in Von Willich Avenue
“There is a bush on the left hand side of the station were criminals usually hide. This is a big problem.”
A 36-year-old women was robbed on Friday morning on her way to work by two men on Von Willich Avenue near the Gautrain station. The robbery happened in the early hours when two men came up to the woman, pulled out a firearm and demanded her possessions.
The two robbers got away with the woman’s purse, containing her cosmetics and other personal items.
“One of the culprits has dreadlocks,” said the victim, but cannot remember the other accomplice’s features.
According to the Lyttelton police similar cases are common around the Gautrain station and many of the train commuters fall victim to muggings and thefts. Police suspect the two culprits had been watching the victim before robbing her.
Head of the Lyttelton Sector 7 CPF Chris Evans warned people walking in the early hours of the morning that they were easy targets and should take caution.
“There is a bush on the left-hand side of the station where criminals usually hide. This is a big problem,” said Evans.
These instances have been on the increase since early this year especially in Von Willich Avenue, Lenchen Avanue, Hendrik Verwoed Drive and the Centurion lake bridge.
Police advised commuters on their way to the train station to travel in groups or pairs to avoid robberies.
