Police hijacker sentenced to 44 years

A Zimbabwean man was sentenced to 44 years imprisonment after he tried to hijack two police officers in Pretoria East in 2012.

A 34-year-old Zimbabwean has been jailed for 44 years after shooting at two police officers during an attempted hijacking in Pretoria East.

Silverton police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said George Mujege and an accomplice approached an unmarked police car in July 2012.

He said the police vehicle had stopped for a red traffic light at Solomon Mahlangu Drive and Pretoria Road.

He said the two assailants had disguised their faces with stockings and pointed a firearm at the two officers.

“They ordered the police officers to freeze and the police retaliated. A shootout ensued and one of the suspects was shot dead. Mujege was critically wounded,” Sepato said.

He said Mujege was treated for several months in hospital under police guard.

“He went through the court processes and was sentenced to 44 years imprisonment at the Pretoria Regional Court last Monday.”

Mujege was convicted on two charges of attempted murder, a charge of possession of unlicensed firearm and two of robbery under aggravating circumstances.

Sepato said: “We applaud the victims and those involved in this case for their patience through this long process.”
