Theft triggers high-speed chase
Four men were arrested after a high-speed police chase.
The theft of a white Toyota Hilux at Sancardia Centre in Arcadia triggered a high-speed chase on Wednesday afternoon.
Police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said two black Volkswagen Polo’s escorted the Hilux that was heading for Thaba Tshwane.
“Police gave chase when they made a wild U-turn, facing oncoming traffic towards the direction of the Laudium Stadium.”
Selepe said police stayed on their tail on Kgosi Mampuru Street in central Pretoria.
Two of the men were apprehended after their black Polo crashed into several vehicles at a red traffic light.
Motorist Fanie Du Preez said his car was rear-ended by the criminals.
“I have stopped at a red traffic light when a black Polo crashed into me, leading to a three-car pile-up. I was slightly injured,” he told Rekord.
Tshwane emergency services attended to the scene, spokesperson Johan Pieterse said.
“One person was seriously injured and was rushed to Unitas Hospital,” he said.
Selepe said the Hilux and the other Polo stopped after entering a nearby bush. The two drivers tried to run away, but were arrested.
Two men were charged with being in possession of car theft tools while the other two faced charges of being in possession of a stolen vehicle.
“The four men might be linked to other cases and they will appear in court soon,” Selepe said.
