NATIONAL NEWS: SA runner withdraws from World Champs over admin mess up

Lukas Jani will have to miss out on the marathon at the world championships in Beijing on Saturday morning because of an administrative mishap.

South African runner, Lukas Jani, was supposed to take part in the 42.2km race at the World Championships in Beijing tomorrow morning, but was rejected after an administrative mishap.

Jani and four other South African marathon runners entered the race but organisers told the team late on Thursday night that they could only enter three members in the race.

Jani fell out because his entry time was the slowest of the four athletes.

The 31-year-old was attending his first major championship and according to the team manager, James Moloi, Jani is devastated.

According to the qualifying rules in the team manual distributed in Beijing, countries can enter a maximum of three athletes per event, but four will be allowed in specific cases, such as the country having the reigning world champion.
