Airline FlySAFair’s birthday promotion of R1 per flight sold out on Wednesday at 12:00.
The airliner had allocated 30 000 tickets.
“It was no lie — we sold 30 000 R1 tickets between yesterday and this morning,” it announced on Wednesday.
But it was not all plain sailing as its system forced a halt to the frenzy when it buckled under the pressure.
The airliner even had to extend the one-day promotion by 12 hours to Wednesday 12:00 after its system crashed on Tuesday, due to a high volume of people making bookings.
Commenting on the crash, FlySafair spokesperson Kirby Gordon: “We want to allow travellers the full benefit of the sale. We are attending to the issue and all we can ask is that people just keep trying.”
The website was again operational on Tuesday evening at 20:30, when only 14 000 tickets remained causing an online stampede as travellers took to social media after securing their tickets to brag about their buys.
“R6 for 3 of us to Durban, return! Thanks @FlySafair,” tweeted @J24VAN.
@BronwynGavine said: “It may have taken me two hours, but for R1 flights, it’s totally worth it! Thanks.”
“Keep trying. I just got 4 to DBN and 4 to PLZ from JNB (Dec and Jan),” said @Zakiyya_c.
